An antidepressant called venlafaxine can work as well, and with less risk of dependence, than SSRIs like Prozac. But its use is limited in some countries and states, and it's sold in a brand-name only form: "Avena," which includes the active metabolites that make up the drug. Prozac (fluoxetine) is one of the most common treatments for depression in Western countries. Unlike venlafaxine, however, fluoxetine has two common side effects: sexual side effects such as diminished libido or an erection disorder; and weight gain due to appetite changes... "Venlafaxine is also more likely than Prozac to cause nausea, nervousness, jitters, insomnia, constipation and diarrhea." Prozac has been the subject of thousands of lawsuits regarding wrongful deaths and injuries to patients. The disputed side effects attributed to fluoxetine include suicide attempts or suicide, abnormal bleeding (nosebleeds), hallucinations (seeing things that aren't there), anxiety attacks with panic attacks (which can include continuous panic attacks), dizziness or fainting when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position. Side Effects of Venlafaxine: Nausea, nervousness, jitters, insomnia, constipation and diarrhea. The serotonin syndrome is rarely reported with venlafaxine. Venlafaxine can affect blood sugar levels, but studies have shown that people with diabetes who take venlafaxine do not develop more type 2 diabetes. Venlafaxine can be used to treat fibromyalgia, although the long-term effectiveness of the drug is debatable. It has been used to treat pain after surgeries or other procedures, however, it has been found less effective than other drugs used for this purpose. It also may produce an unpleasant "black-out" effect in some people, which causes them to have no memory of what they did during the blackout period. This can make it difficult for patients to gauge the risks and benefits of the drug. Venlafaxine is an effective antidepressant, but it has been found to be no better than placebo in treating pain after childbirth, although it may reduce preterm labor. Venlafaxine can be taken in concert with conventional antidepressants, which are usually much more effective in treating mental disorders. The combination of venlafaxine with other drugs also can cause severe gut problems. Venlafaxine may cause serious liver damage when used with other drugs that affect the liver or different types of bacteria that live there. Many people who take venlafaxine may develop venlafaxine hepatitis within six months after starting the medication and in rare cases, Can develop in people who have taken the drug for more than two years. Venlafaxine has been associated with suicidal thoughts and behavior in children. The risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior is especially high when a baby is born to a mother who has been taking the drug. Venlafaxine use during pregnancy (particularly when fluoxetine is used) may result in birth defects such as cleft palate and an underdeveloped jawbone ( talk about the most common birth defects ). cfa1e77820
